Pierre Balmain (1914-1982) est l’un des grands couturiers français du XXe siècle.
Né à Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne en Savoie, il se forme à l’architecture avant de se tourner vers la mode. Il commence sa carrière chez Lucien Lelong, aux côtés de Christian Dior et Hubert de Givenchy, avant de fonder sa propre maison en 1945 à Paris.

Balmain se distingue rapidement par son style raffiné et structuré, qu’il qualifie de « Jolie Madame » : silhouettes féminines, taille marquée, robes élégantes et tailleurs sophistiqués qui séduisent la haute société internationale. Parmi ses clientes figurent Ava Gardner, Brigitte Bardot, Katharine Hepburn, la reine Sirikit de Thaïlande ou encore Marlène Dietrich.

Pierre Balmain (1914–1982) was one of the great French couturiers of the 20th century.
Born in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in the French Alps, he first studied architecture before turning to fashion. He began his career at Lucien Lelong, working alongside Christian Dior and Hubert de Givenchy, before founding his own fashion house in Paris in 1945.

Balmain quickly gained fame for his refined and structured style, which he described as “Jolie Madame”: feminine silhouettes, cinched waists, elegant gowns, and sophisticated suits that captivated high society around the world. His clients included Ava Gardner, Brigitte Bardot, Katharine Hepburn, Queen Sirikit of Thailand, and Marlene Dietrich.
