The centre features the Grand Cross star (current model), surrounded by the Order’s iconic wide red ribbon.
Around it, a series of historic medallions retraces the evolution of the insignia since 1802:
– profile of Napoleon I
– imperial eagle (First and Second Empire)
– fleurs-de-lys (Restoration)
– crossed flags (Monarchy of July and modern version)
– founder’s monogram “N”.
