Christian Dior Ivory Silk Shawl – Floral Lace Pattern (circa 1988–1992)
This sumptuous shawl, signed Christian Dior Boutique – Paris, beautifully embodies the timeless elegance of the house of Dior in the late 20th century. Crafted from 100% silk, it features a luminous ivory background adorned with a delicate black motif reminiscent of Chantilly lace, reinterpreted here in a graphic and contemporary style.
The label, the aesthetic treatment of the pattern, and the subtle monogram woven tone-on-tone at the center allow us to date this piece to the late 1980s or early 1990s, at the intersection of Marc Bohan’s final creations and the early days of Gianfranco Ferré at Dior.
The shawl’s edges are delicately fringed, enhancing the elegance of its drape. The Christian Dior signature appears discreetly in one corner.
This stylized lace motif resonates directly with an iconic haute couture dress from the Dior archives, presented in the exhibition “Louvre Couture. Objets d’art, objets de mode”, held at the Musée du Louvre (24 January – 21 July 2025). I visited this marvellous exhibition The dress, made of white silk embroidered with black scrolls, reflects the same idea of lace reimagined through the lens of contemporary couture.
